A Community of Solidarity

In my sophomore year at college, joining The Black Student Union (BSU) became a crucial turning point in my college journey. As an African American male at a predominantly white institution (PWI), I often felt out of place and struggled to find spaces where I could comfortably express my identity. The BSU became more than just a club; it was a community that understood and valued Black experiences, offering the cultural validation and sense of belonging I had been missing since freshman year.

Through the BSU, I connected with peers and mentors who shared similar backgrounds, experiences, and struggles. This group became an oasis where my voice was heard, my experiences were validated, and I received guidance on navigating college life—from academics to social opportunities. Having upper-level students share insights on what classes to take, where to find additional support, and which events fostered real connections reassured me that I was not alone in my challenges. It was inspiring to know that others had once felt similarly disconnected, and I found comfort in understanding that my struggles weren’t unique but shared.

Being part of BSU empowered me to actively engage in discussions on social justice, cultural celebrations, and the challenges Black students face on campus. These experiences provided an opportunity to give back to the community by contributing to a more inclusive campus culture. I learned the value of representation and the impact of speaking out about issues affecting us. In doing so, I felt I was helping create a campus environment where Black students felt visible, heard, and valued.

Ultimately, BSU became a lifeline, equipping me with the tools and confidence to advocate for myself and others. It transformed my college experience by instilling a sense of solidarity and pride in my identity, making it possible for me to not just survive but thrive. Knowing I had a community that valued my experiences empowered me to face challenges with resilience, creating a path for me to excel academically, socially, and personally while positively shaping the campus for those who would come after me.
